Compositional devices I used to insure a strong design in this piece!
I hope these will be a help to you as you work out the design in your works!
Design, Design,Design...these were the words of my art professor, Bill Parks, who had a 70 minute train commute every day where he would spend his time continually doodling on notecards to record the simple abstract shapes he would encounter on his ride. He then took these "compositional notes" and built paintings around these bold graphic shapes that he recorded. I've never forgotten his continual reminder to consider this importance of simple abstract shapes in my own work.
These thoughts were foremost in my mind as I built this composition, "From Mora" 48 x 40 oil.
Enjoy a few things I'd like you to share with you that were very intentional devices utilized in the creation of this work.
~A strong focal point (your eyes need a place to land and come back to, without this, the viewer is left with an uneasy feeling. The human face, combined with the sharpest edges and strongest color all leave the viewer no option but to lock into her gaze.)
~Simple graphic lights and darks (there are many objects included in this composition, however, they are grouped into connected shapes with value unity within those shapes.)
~Strong contrasts (this element can create great power while adding dimension and excitement. Notice the striking sharp edge of the collar against the soft tones on the neck which draw you into the focal point, or the strong, saturated red against the soft green grays.)
~Color Repetition (experience the soft blue as it descends on every top plane of every object, creating a beautiful, unified harmony.)
These are just a few of the elements which I delve into great detail on my latest video, "Composition and the Art of Picture Making".
I not only share the concepts, but show within the creation of a painting, tips on how I tangibly accomplish these principles. If you are interested in more on this, "Composition and the Art of Picture Making" is on sale through May 12th, 2023
