I hope you find this lesson "Observing the Whole" most helpful.
In all of my years of teaching, I have found the single most important bit of wisdom I can share is to observe the subject as a whole when making EVERY judgement in terms of Value, Edge and Color.
What I mean specifically is this... when you are judging values, look at the area you are working on in comparison to the overall hierarchical range that you see on the whole subject. (How does this value compare to the LIGHTEST LIGHT or DARKEST DARK of the entire picture plane!)Â
How do we do this????Â
We must squint at the whole subject, THE WHOLE SCENE... the focal point, background, foreground and everything that fits within your picture frame, then compare the smaller specific part that you am working on to that overall range. This is true in VALUES, EDGES, and COLOR. SQUINT,SQUINT, SQUINT!!!
This truth and many more in my new release, "Chardonnay and Daffodil",Â
