"Finding the Most Elegant Lines!"
As I was painting the lines of the model's hair as it fell across her forehead, my initial lines were too straight, creating a static look and box like shape with a parallel line to the front of her forehead. (see 1st photo below) On closer look, I noticed a slight swing in the rhythm of the line which created a much more pleasing look, with a minor arc above and a major arc below. It is critical that these two arcs not be the same size, as that would have created a uninteresting sameness.
In the bottom photo, you will see the delineation of the Major and Minor arcs.
It is the subtleties like this that draw our viewers in and take their breath away, which in the end, is our goal!
When we strive to find the most beautiful lines throughout, our paintings will be far more lyrical and poetic. Hence, I believe our viewers will greater enjoy and be refreshed by the work.
